Brief description

Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Introduction

I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience. I know no way of judging of the future but by the past.

History is the present. That's why every generation writes it anew. But what most people think of as history is its end product, a myth.

Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

We can learn from history how past generations thought and acted, how they responded to the demands of their time and how they solved their problems. We can learn by analogy, not by example, for our circumstances will always be different than theirs were. The main thing history can teach us is that human actions have consequences and that certain choices, once made, cannot be undone. They foreclose the possibility of making other choices and thus they determine future events.

People always seemed to know half of history, and to get it confused with the other half, just make sure you are not one of them. :)
